Rainwater Tank and Hand Pump
A few months ago I finally finished a project of mine. Well, actually it was a few projects that got finished. Firstly our shed got spouting. That was a few years in the making. But the thing that fuelled it all was wanting to install a water tank and hand pump for the garden and play.
Kids love water. And what is even more exciting? Water and sand! My kids could spend hours with their friends playing under the (non-fruiting) cherry tree in the sandpit with the hose. But I wanted my kids to learn that water was precious, and that we need to use it wisely.
My solution was the tank and a pump that meant they had to work for their water.
The pump is a K1 semi rotary hand pump. I got the idea from a local Playcentre but it took me a while to hunt out the pump they had. It is attached with an inline filter and non return valve to a slimline 800 litre tank from The Tank Guy .
So now we fill the paddling pool, create muddy puddles, play in the sandpit and fill up the chickens water using rainwater and a pump. And if I think enough water has been drained I can subtly turn off the master tap and claim that the tank is empty.
Best of all, kids love using it.
